Hey there old friends at Philly Future! How the heck are you? Listen we have something coming up during Friday, September 5th, 2008's First Friday Main Line! Check out our YouTube Public Service Announcement!
In a nutshell, come out to support our Veteran’s and Active Duty Troops on September 5th, 2008 during a very special “First Friday ” event at the Ardmore V.F.W Post 843 in Ardmore, PA from 5-9 P.M. during First Friday Main Line.
We are proud to introduce the Main Line to American Troop Support Team (ATST) !
ATST has been working for over four years to send letters and boxes of donated goods to help our soldiers. This group was formed to provide tangible support to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces-- particularly those currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Contributed donations and products will be used to package and ship goods to our troops. Packages have and will include, but are not limited to, snack foods, personal hygiene items, reading materials and other items which are consistent with American, as well as Military law. The names of soldiers are submitted and selected in a non-discriminatory manner.
In addition, the VFW is opening their doors to new social membership**. A contribution of $20.00 will give you a year-long membership to this 75 year old post. Half of the proceeds will go to restoring and keeping the V.F.W. post active for our local soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as our veterans of previous wars. The other half of the proceeds collected will be donated to the “American Troop Support Team” (ATST).
We hope to see you and that you can help us in this worthy cause! Support those who protect our freedoms!
(**Please note to become a social member of the VFW you must show LEGAL proof of age)
...And as a postscript, we will note that First Friday Main Line has many other fabulous events planned for Friday September 5th, as First Friday jazzes it up with a Main Line Blues Stroll,Miles of Art, and also hosts a special book signing at Past*Present*Future in Ardmore for the up and coming novelist who published "Creamy Nougat" a few months ago - Mr. Erec Smith

Krista Rothwell, One and One is One, diptych 36 x 96, oil on canvas
Projects Gallery opens its 2008-09 season with Fresh! 2008. Inspired by Philadelphia’s rich and multi-faceted artistic talent, this invitational exhibition highlights this city’s emerging artists. The palpable energy of the current art scene has been garnering increasing attention and critical respect. Fresh! is an unique opportunity to bring together disparate artists united not by imposed thematic or material concerns but as a chorus of individual voices heralding the vibrant, varied directions of contemporary art. Selected by gallery Director Helen Meyrick because of her immediate visceral response to their work, these artists diversely employ sculpture, photography, painting and drawing. Regardless of chosen style, material, or subject, these artists are a breath of fresh air.
Carl Main, Pooh Deer, 25 x 10 x 18, mixed media
A sampling of the contrasts in style illustrates the range of the artists, while placing them in the larger context of contemporary movements. Krista Rothwell paints neo-realistic images of herself and her sister on flat, spaceless color fields, demonstrating that the art of painting is far from dead. Carl Marin portrays the confrontation between nature and urban encroachment, echoing current design and kitsch aesthetics. Brooke Holloway’s works on paper require careful viewing, revealing biting commentary on feminist issues through the contradictory tangles of popular culture. Previously a graphic designer, Gregory Farrar Scott’s sculptural work is imbued with humor, cheekily riffing on found objects used to create pseudo-portraits.
Gregory Farrar Scott, Mask 10, 14.75 x 8 x 6, mixed media
Fresh! provides these artists a blank canvas on which to make their mark in the Philadelphia arts arena. Participants include: Cat Badger, Rosanne D'Andrea, Talia Greene, Brooke Holloway, Carl Marin, Itsuki Ogihara, Marilyn Rodriguez-Behrle, Lynn Rosenthal, Mia Rosenthal, Krista Rothwell, Gregory Farrar Scott, Heather Sundquist, and others. Many of these artists are recent graduates from several of Philadelphia’s finest art schools, including Moore College of Art and Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Temple University’s Tyler School of Art.
Brooke Holloway, Dumb Bitch, 60 x 48, acrylic on canvas
Fresh! runs from Friday August 29 through September 27, 2008 with a First Friday artist reception September 5th, from 6-9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Wednesday & Thursday 4-7 and Friday & Saturday noon to 7 p.m. For more information or digital images, please contact Projects Gallery at 267-303-9652 or info@projectsgallery.com.

Helium is less than two weeks away from its biggest event of the year – the 2008 Philly's Phunniest Person Contest. With almost 150 contestants battling for the $1,000 grand prize and the title of Philly's Phunniest Person, this year's two-week competition is bound to be the biggest and most exciting yet.
And do you know what the best part is? YOU can help! That's right, during the preliminary round, the audience will be the determining factor in deciding which contestants will advance to the next round.
But wait - it gets better. When making a reservation to attend a show, simply mention this blog and receive 2-for-1 admission to ANY of the TEN shows during the preliminary round. With 10-15 contestants on every show, each night will be vastly different. This offer is valid for all ten shows, if you choose to be that adventurous.
The competition is not only a great way to check out the diversity of the up-and-coming Philly comedy scene, but also a great way for you to catch some comedians before they advance to bigger and better career opportunities. (You never know - after all, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Mitch Hedberg and Louis CK were all comedy competition winners, just to name a few).
This year's competition will be hosted by the 2007 winner, Steve Gerben. Since winning the contest, Steve has performed at the Borgata in Atlantic City with MADtv's Frank Caliendo, made it to the finals in the Purina Pet Comedy Challenge in St. Louis and was invited to perform in a Just For Laughs showcase in North Carolina.
Local celebrity judges from television and radio as well as industry representatives from Comedy Central, HBO & CBS will judge the semi-finals and finals. The winner will be determined on the 8pm show on Saturday, August 16, and the 10:30 show that evening will be a showcase featuring the top six finalists.
We're not asking you to watch Philadelphia comedy history; we're asking you to help us make it happen.
Preliminary Round:
Tuesday, August 5, 8pm - $10
Wednesday, August 6, 8pm - $10
Thursday, August 7, 8pm - $10

PHILADELPHIA – Mauckingbird Theatre Company will present Shakespeare's R&J by award-winning playwright Joe Calarco and directed by Mauckingbird Artistic Director Peter Reynolds from August 1 – 23, 2008 at the Adrienne Theatre's Mainstage, located at 2030 Sansom Street in Philadelphia. A follow up to the company's sold-out inaugural production of an all-male The Misanthrope, Shakespeare's R&J is also performed by a male cast. Named 1 of the "Five Best Plays" in London by The Independent, Shakespeare's R & J has enjoyed successful, critically acclaimed runs both off-Broadway and on London's West End. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students and are available by calling (215) 923-8909 or online at www.mauckingbirdtheatreco.org.
Shakespeare's R&J spins the classic story of history's most famous "star-cross'd lovers" in a modern tale of teenage awakening. Mauckingbird Theatre Company's intimate production explores youthful desires, vulnerability and burgeoning sexuality as four schoolboys at a repressive preparatory school discover William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and find themselves suddenly immersed in the tragic story of forbidden love. As the boys assume the roles of all the play's characters, the classic tale begins to blur with the students' own lives and Shakespeare's verse is heard anew.
Hailed as a "vibrant, hot-blooded new adaptation [that] pulsates with an adolescent abandon" by The New York Times and an "exploration of passion and repression in both Shakespeare's time and our own" by Variety, Joe Calarco's revisionist tale continues to speak to audiences around the globe.
"Joe Calarco's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is inspired. It offers a powerful message of tolerance and acceptance without being didactic," says Peter Reynolds. "New discoveries are illuminated in Shakespeare's original text with the frequent gender changes of the characters, producing a provocative work that continues to remain timely and relevant in our current social and political climate."
The talented young cast of four is led by Evan Jonigkeit as Romeo, whose recent credits include Célimène in Mauckingbird's sold-out hit The Misanthrope, Six Characters in Search of an Author at People's Light & Theatre, Dishwashers at Walnut Street Theatre, and Fox TV's Twice a Hero. Conrad Ricamora portrays Juliet, and his recent credits include USER 927 (Brat Prod.), Ferdinand the Bull (Arden), West Side Story (New Candlelight), Romeo & Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew (NC Shakespeare Festival).
Newton Buchanan and Nicholas Park play the two other students and various characters. Buchanan has worked exclusively with Hedgerow Theatre for the past four years, appearing in over 30 productions as an actor, while Park is a senior musical theatre major at the University of the Arts who has appeared at the Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Theatre Festival.
The Misanthrope production team returns including set and costume designer Marie Anne Chiment, lighting designer Maria Shaplin, and voice and text coordinator Lynne Innerst, with the addition of fight director John V. Bellomo.
Founded by Artistic Director Peter Reynolds and Managing Director Lindsay Mauck, Mauckingbird Theatre Company is committed to producing professional gay-themed theatre, while also exploring classic literature and musical genres and providing affordable productions of infrequently produced works.
Reynolds currently serves as the Director of Musical Theater for the Department of Theater at Temple University. For Temple Theaters he has directed productions of Into the Woods, Ragtime, Company, Pericles, Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery and Beautiful Thing. In Philadelphia, he has directed productions at Act II Playhouse, Walnut Street Theatre, Hedgerow Theatre, Villanova Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company in their collaborations with Philadelphia Young Playwrights, and he spent two seasons with the Lenape Regional Performing Arts Center in New Jersey where he assisted the Producing Artistic Director. Reynolds spent 6 years as Artistic Director of the award-winning HealthWorks Theatre in Chicago and has also worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Theatre Building Chicago, Apollo Theatre Chicago, St. Louis' HotCity Theatre, Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, and Maples Repertory.
Playwright and director Joe Calarco is the creator of Shakespeare's R&J, winner of the 1998 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Special Achievement in Theatre for an off-Broadway production. Calarco also directed the play's premieres in Chicago (garnering five Jeff Award nominations including Best Play and Best Director), Washington, D.C. (garnering the Helen Hayes Award nominations for Best Play and Best Director), London's West End (named 1 of the "Five Best Plays" by The Independent, honorable mention from the Evening Standard Awards committee for direction), and the Japanese premiere in Tokyo. Calarco's regional credits include Philadelphia Theatre Company's The Last Five Years (Barrymore Award-nominee for Best Director, winner for Best Musical) and Elegies: a song cycle (seven-time Barrymore Award-nominee with wins for Best Musical Director and Best Ensemble of a Musical).

I want to share with everyone the wonderful weekend vacation I have planned for the 4ht of July! I, like most of you I'm assuming, feel like the price of gas has placed a limit on my vacation opportunities.
Well, I'm not happy about it, so I did some research and I found a way to vacation without giving my money to gas conglomerates! This weekend I'm going to Philadelphia Premium Outlets!! I'm staying at the Comfort Inn and because it's teamed up with PPO I get a $25 gift card to the outlets! So the first 25 dollars I spend is completely on the outlets!
PPO is about 45 minutes northwest of Philadelphia so it's really close and it won't cost me a lot to get there. They have extended hours and additional savings for the holiday!! They already offer 25-65% off designer clothes and bags so I'm going to get great deals this weekend. They have about 150 stores so it's perfect that I'm giving myself the entire weekend to veg out at the hotel and shop at my own pace. It's going to feel so good to spend my money on things I can have for the next 5 years rather than spend my money on a plan trip far away.
On Saturday and Sunday PPO has entertainment in food court area. They have classic rock and oldies and they are featuring an acoustic guitar player and vocalist. I'm going to hear live music while I spend my money wisely this weekend! I'm so excited to celebrate the holiday and I'm not going to feel an ounce of guilt about it! Sorry, I coudn't resist the chance to tell everyone about this. If you don't decide to follow me have a great 4th of July!
