BREAKING NEWS: SAVE ARDMORE COALITION GOES GLOBAL IN THE ESTEEMED ECONOMIST!!!!

http://www.economist.com/world/na/PrinterFriendly.cfm?Story_ID=4298759

This week’s additional must read? The Economist http://www.economist.com/world/na/displaystory.cfm?story_id=4298759 has published their story and it is a DOOZY! Thank you Economist!

Lower Merion Township is going to need a BIG bottle of ibuprofen and a very LARGE, very STIFF drink! We are hardly able to contain our glee! Can you stand it? Little Ardmore, and the “yesterday’s news grassroots activists of the Save Ardmore Coalition are rocking globally & nationally thanks to a very nice reporter who called up Scott Mahan one day recently and said he’s like to write Ardmore’s story. When he got here, he looked around, looked confused, and asked where the blight was? And the rest, as they say, is history!

JUICY Tidbits we excerpted:

“Lower Merion's board appears to be retreating. Matthew Comisky, its president, admits that it was a mistake to send out those letters summarily telling shopkeepers they were to be evicted….He denies that the protests have prompted the board to change tack, but admits that the protestors “have done a good job of publicizing themselves.

*[Note to “Captain Comisky of the SS (as in Sinking Ship) Lower Merion Township: anything you can spin we can spin BETTER. Why? Because we have TRUTH on our side. It is amazing how supportive folks are when you just tell the truth. Maybe Lower Merion should hire the Save Ardmore Coalition to be their publicist?]*

“The “Save Ardmore Coalition now has 1,000 members—not bad for such a small town.

“The local government had declared the area “blighted. But a brief walkabout reveals that it is no more blighted than the potato you ate for lunch.

“A grass-roots movement has arisen to keep other people's hands off private homes. Libertarian groups such as the Institute for Justice, which were campaigning against eminent-domain abuse before Kelo, report an upsurge in support, both moral and monetary.

“Property-owners fighting against local government have been buoyed by the backlash. In the town of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, for example, a small group of businessfolk received letters last year informing them that their shops were to be demolished to make way for a new development including apartments and a parking garage. “

““It was devastating, says Eni Foo, whose Chinese restaurant is on the list. “I've been in the United States since 1963. I came as a graduate student and stayed because I love America. I always believed America [respected] individuals' rights.

“The condemned properties include a second-hand shop that supports the local hospital, a club for veterans of foreign wars and Scott Mahan's stationery shop, which has been in his family since 1926.

“…it has trebled Mr Comisky's workload. Since he also has a full-time day job as a lawyer, this means he hardly sees his family. “Last night I put my son to sleep at 9pm and got up 3am, he says. He adds that he will not seek re-election when his term expires.

*[Poor baby, we cry out loud for you and harmonize with the itty bitty violins of pity]*

"Fight Eminent Domain Abuse. It doesn't discriminate. Today it's Ardmore, tomorrow, your town or neighborhood"

congrats, and an interesting side note

that's great news! I'm so happy to hear about this additional exposure.

Susie of Suburban Guerrilla just linked to an interesting story about The New York Times' new office building that involves eminent domain.

The story, from the Village Voice, is about all of the restrictions that the Times has placed on the kinds of businesses that will be allowed to lease space in its new building.

The irony is here:

Lease restrictions that exclude the public may not be unusual in luxury office buildings, but there is an irony in this case. The Pataki administration, acting on behalf of the New York Times Company, condemned the property for a so-called "public purpose." This is the standard the Fifth Amendment sets for the state to invoke the immense power of eminent domain.

At one time, "public purpose" usually meant a highway, bridge, or utility service—something the public was actually allowed to use. But now it's routine for the courts to declare it a "public purpose" for the state to seize privately owned land so that another private owner can erect a very private office building where the public can't even buy an inexpensive taco. In this case, the services many New Yorkers most need—health, education, job placement—are officially locked out of a building that will be heavily subsidized by city taxpayers. And, it should be noted, this is a site with unique public access, located across the street from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and upstairs from the city's subway crossroads.

man

That is effin' incredible.

Keep it up...

THANKS!

Folks- this is getting fun!!!! Thanks for all the shout outs!
