I, like many of the readers of this blog, am pretty "poor," in that middle-class student with lots of loans type of way. I just gave $25 to the Red Cross, to at least help out a little bit with the effort to help mitigate the horrific, and I mean horific, damage in New Orleans.
The water is still rising. 80 percent of New Orleans is under water. Highways in and out of New Orleans have now been destroyed under the weight of water. Mississippi death tolls are expected to be in the hundreds. Tulane Hospital, with 1000 patients, is filling with water. In short, it is goddamn Armageddon, and getting worse by the hour.
People will be hungry, homeless, and devastated.
Donate something here. If you do, leave a note in the comments.
C'mon Philly. Do it.

Katrina and her killer waves
You are so right danielua, and we already have one member of our group who has donated....this person did the check in with childhood friends who now live in Coconut Creek, FL (downed trees, but ok), and this person is still trying to find out if other friends who are in MS and NO, LA are o.k.
The thing that struck us is the spirit of those New Orleans folks. One report of a man happy because the French Quarter was still standing particularly moved us. And the film on TV of a statue of a saint outside a famous old church that survived except for losing two stone fingers while everything else around it was destroyed.
You are right, no matter how small, just give. Also check the Inquire online, because they have a list of legitimate charities who are helping Katrina's victims.
Other groups one might consider donating to would be legitimate animal charitiess like humane societies, because there are going to also be a lot of displaced domestic animals - cats, dogs, etc., etc.
We also want to know who filled up their gas tanks already this week? One of our other members paid $2.67 a gallon for regular this afternoon. And of course, if you are doing home renovations, you are going to shortly find supplies down and items sold out at your neighborhood Lowes and Home Depots.
Mother Nature has a way of making it all real, doesn't she?
Pray for those folks in the south in MS and LA. They could use a little "Irish Insurance" as well as help from all of us through places like the red cross.
absolute insanity
give what you can - they need everything we can give.
Done here too
I gave $25 as well but somehow I feel sort of weird posting about it. Like I don't have to justify it or anything, I just decided to give the money because it's the right thing to do. Not to criticize what's above or anything. I'm lucky that I'm able to have a lot of material stuff and go to a good school in a great city so it's my responsibility to give something back when it's time.
I donated to America's Second Harvest
I have some problems with Red Cross (I'll donate blood to them, but don't trust financial donations to them personally). I donated to America's Second Harvest's Katrina Relief fund instead.
