Student Voice: The Girard JOURNAL Encourages Young Writers

As school winds down and the temperatures go up, tempers will flare, people will get hurt. It's "Summer in the city". At Girard College www.girardcollege.com , students are getting ready for Camp Girard 2006. The annual Summer Camp program is open to Girard students as well as the surrounding community. It's a great opportunity for community youth to get a taste of the on-campus experience of the residential boarding school for academically capable students. Girard College accepts students from grades 1 through twelve.

This year, Camp Girard will feature a host of academic summer enrichments, field trips, and challenging opportunities for students to be involved in "Service Learning" at the school, and in the community.

A new, on-line newspaper "The Girard JOURNAL" will encourage 'student voice' and allow students to get a taste of internet journalism and learn about media, and public relations careers.

Recently, through the G-SAP (After School Program) a Girad College senior, David Jackson had an article published in City Paper in Philadelphia where he served a school internship. The piece was entitled "Racial Divide" and addressed the absence of caucasian students at the once all white, free tuition boarding school. David is an African-American student. Girard is currently looking at diversity--among students, faculty and staff.

Camp Girard is set to start on June 26th and The Girard JOURNAL is a student run, student voice electronic medium to encourage young journalists. Look for us at www.GirardJOURNAL.blogspot.com
