Analysis of the job market

If you've recently been laid off, you've probably had someone tap you on the shoulder and tell you something like: "Out of crisis comes opportunity," or "When one door closes, another opens." It probably feels a little pat, but the truth is that many workers will use the downturn to switch out of a slow-growth career—and into work with a much more promising future.

The financial crisis and economic recession have made quick work of an expected gradual evolution in our economy. In the next few years, it could look very different—a shrunken Wall Street will force bankers to find jobs in other industries, a massive green-energy effort could create jobs that are barely on the map today, and an expanding healthcare sector could offer new opportunities for a broad swath of workers. So whether you're out of work or you're gainfully employed, you should keep on eye on the changing nature of our job market.

U.S. News has plowed through hundreds of careers, looking for the jobs with the best outlook in this recessionary economy (and beyond), the highest rates of job satisfaction, the least difficult training necessary, the most prestige, and the highest pay. These careers have staying power: They're smart moves now, and they'll be smart moves for years to come.

It's also important to consider the effect of an Obama presidency on the labor market. The president-elect has indicated that healthcare reform will be a priority for his administration. Overhauling our existing system to make way for universal healthcare will require the hard work of many health policy specialists, who will be called upon to examine, analyze, or advise on everything from economic approaches to ethical outcomes of policy changes. Schools like Harvard, Penn, and Johns Hopkins offer interdisciplinary health policy programs, but there will be good job opportunities for people with primary expertise in economics, politics, medicine, accounting, management, and ethics, as well.

Some best careers may surprise you. Did you know that hair stylists rank among the most satisfied with their jobs? (No need to fear that your work will be outsourced, either.) Pharmacists are increasingly in demand as medical advisers, thanks to soaring physicians' costs and appointment delays. Firefighter is among the most prestigious careers, as ranked by the public in a Harris poll. It ranks behind scientist and physician—two careers that require much bigger investments in higher education. The veterinarian career—long a favorite for kids who love pets—is a surprisingly smart adult choice, with plenty of opportunities in the field, a variety of work environments, and, although it can be stressful, great reward for your labor.

Workers who crave job security may find their last bastion of hope in the federal government. Government can always raise taxes or print more money—and it still offers full-time, well-paying positions with generous benefits, including ample holidays, sick days, and vacation days. More good news: There will be plenty of jobs to choose from, as a big chunk of federal employees become eligible for retirement over the next decade. Opportunities for a government manager abound—in everything from human resources to finance, research to public relations, and technology to art, with jobs throughout the United States and the world.

AUTHENTIC presents, "Dance for Democracy," A Philadelphia Community Affair

AUTHENTIC, Collective for Women Artists and Musicians of Color
PR+, “It’s All in the Name.”
___________________________________________________________________
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local Women, under 25, Making Moves in Art and Music While Giving Back to Philadelphia

On Saturday, November 1, 2008, AUTHENTIC and KHOLI PR+ will present (in conjunction with Philadelphia’s local artist hotspot, The Arts Garage), a “Dance for Democracy, the third event in AUTHENTIC’s “Art for Awareness” series.

AUTHENTIC is asking that all community organizers, promoters, politicians, business executives, and anyone not named in this list come out to The Arts Garage on November 1, 2008 at 6 pm.

Everyone is invited because democracy is not anyone’s exclusive responsibility.

“Dance for Democracy” takes the best of your local poets, musicians, artists, and community organizers, then brings them out from behind closed doors into public view to release their political opinions. The event, sponsored by Glaceau Smart and Vitamin Water and The Arts Garage, is part community fundraiser for Philadelphia’s Project H.O.M.E. and City team Ministries, part listening party for Philadelphia native and recently-signed Columbia recording artist, Selina Carrera.

Simone Banks and Carrie Y.T. Kholi, Co-Founders and Partners in AUTHENTIC and PR+, agree to describe their “mixed-medium” events using one word: different.
“I wish we could put questions on our flyers,” says Banks. “Like, ‘Tired of the same ol’ same ol’?’” “Philadelphia has a lot of really awesome and authentic artists and musicians right here. We also pull from NY, D.C., Baltimore, and Atlanta. You don’t have to go far to find talent. AUTHENTIC and the artists that we work with are just trying to remind people that you can do that. You can find the talent, market it, and still care about your community. You can still give back. This is not something we see every day.”

“We are writers and students first, you know?,” adds Kholi. “… Simone is a journalist because of Temple University. I care about words and craft because of Hampton University. We stalk talent because we feed off of it. It fuels our passion. It makes us stop and think, ‘Who is this artist? What can I do for her? What can she do for AUTHENTIC? What new partnership, new creative force is going to be formed?” As she laughs, Kholi adds, “Then we think, ‘Now how can we write about this, blog about it, talk about it, let the world know?’”

“Dance for Democracy” will serve as a solid opportunity for the Philadelphia community leaders to come together with the Philadelphia community. This is an event, a moment of extreme potential, not to be missed.

Final Event Details:
• Where: The Arts Garage, 1516 Parrish Street, Philadelphia, PA / 1533-35 Ridge Avenue Philadelphia, PA (Both addresses apply to the same venue.)
• When: November 1, 2008 at 6 pm

Entry fee:
• One donated coat for Project H.O.M.E.
OR
• $5 donation to City Team Ministries

*** THIS IS AN OUTDOOR EVENT ... BRING TWO COATS ... ONE FOR YOU ... AND ONE FOR PROJECT H.O.M.E.

About Selina Carrera
Selina Carrera is a prolific, stylistic vocalist, recently signed to Columbia Records as a recording artist. Carrera's distinctive sound is a blend of Latin jazz and hip-hop, vocally. A futuristic lyricist too complex to be classified as a rapper, she fits under the title of MC, and is also a spoken-word poet. Like most great vocalists, Carrera began singing in her church choir at the age of eight, and has been professionally trained since the age of ten. Carrera's main musical influences are samba, salsa, jazz, funk, and hip-hop. A Philadelphia native, Carrera was both a student at the Girard Academic Music Program and a vocal major at the Creative and Performing Arts High School.

Recently, her hard work has been recognized not only locally, but also around the country. Carrera has been humbled by having the privilege of being managed by Chris Schwartz, co-founder of the renowned independent label, RuffHouse Records. RuffHouse was responsible for fostering such acts as Kriss Kross and The Fugees. Carrera is now hard at work producing her debut album.

Selina Carrera is blessed beyond words and feels completely satisfied with the way life is taking her. As a real musician she is definitely an artist on the rise and will be truly legendary.

Buying A Titanium Wedding Ring - 5 Things You Should Know

1. Why should you buy a titanium wedding ring?

Titanium wedding rings combine beauty and strength, but are light weight. If you want your wedding ring to last a lifetime, then you will definitely need a ring that is strong. The strength and hardness helps to prevent scratches and dings. But if you are like most people, you probably want it light enough that you do not mind wearing it all the time. Despite its hardness, titanium wedding rings are surprisingly light weight. Lastly, you will be amazed at the comments you will receive about your titanium wedding ring's simplicity and beauty.

2. What is the best way to buy titanium wedding rings?

When selecting a titanium wedding ring, be sure to take into account the finger size and shape of your fiancée's ring finger. Whether you plan on buying a ring at a brick and mortar store or at an online retailer, you should at least visit a brick and mortar store to have your ring finger sized properly.

If you and your fiancée plan on getting matching titanium wedding rings, make sure that the design fits the shape of both of your ring fingers and that you both agree on the design.

Most importantly, you will want to deal with a reputable jeweler that will be there for you over the years to resize and polish the ring. You do not want to deal with a fly by night jeweler who will not be around in a year. You can search for reviews online or ask for recommendations from your friends and family that live in the same area as you.

3. Can you get titanium wedding rings in different colors?

Yes, you get titanium wedding rings in different colors. Titanium wedding rings are considered a white metal, similar to platinum, with a grayish undertone. In order to add color, the ring must be anodized with a color treatment. However, it is important to not that the color treatment is not permanent and can make the titanium wedding ring appear scratched and discolored over time.

4. Can you get wedding tiffany rings with titanium that also have other precious metals in them?

Absolutely! If you like a little more variety in the titanium wedding ring you will be wearing every day, you can request the ring be combined with yellow, rose or white gold. Some people even choose to have titanium and platinum wedding rings created. Just depends on your preference.

5. How can you determine the quality of your titanium wedding ring?

As with any precious metal, you can either choose to have a pure titanium wedding ring made or go for an alloyed titanium wedding ring that contains a mixture of metals. Most reputable jewelers will let you know what the commercially pure (CP) grade of their titanium rings are. If they do not, you should definitely ask! CP grades range from 1 which is the softest to 4 which is the hardest. The most common CP grade for titanium rings is CP2 because it balances the ability to have a harder titanium wedding ring but is still soft enough to be etched and engraved
