Great Expectations: District 4 Agenda Meeting II

great expectations district 4 forum curtis jonesAfter the breakout sessions, all three groups reconvened in the gym for the Q&A session. Councilman Curtis Jones took a walk over to my group's giant sticky notes which were taped to the wall. He took it all in and turned to say: "They're gonna ask me all these questions?!" to which I replied with a smile, "As many as they can."

great expectations district 4 forum curtis jonesThe crowd took their seats after grabbing some coffee and cookies from the spread in the back. The Inquirer's Chris Satullo took the time to introduce the newly elected Jones to the crowd and thanked him for coming down into the fray and for the good turnout on that cold night. And then the questions started. Two of the earliest questions were about zoning/development, specifically if Jones would pledge his support to local community groups who have concerns about incoming development. Jones started off by saying that he thinks this district is the hottest in terms of new development and invited the crowd to tell the other council members he said so. He pledged his support for local causes and said that 9 times out of 10, he'd err on the side of the community's wishes instead of those of developers'. He added that he'd propose regional zoning boards.

FREE Concert at The Music Workshop!

Please join us for free concert hosted by The Music Workshop on Sunday, October 28th @ 5:00 pm. The Music Workshop provides private music instruction, as well as periodically hosts concerts and master classes. The concerts/master classes are open to the public. We currently have two locations; one in the Manayunk section of the city and another in Berwyn, Pa. serving the Western Main Line.
The concert will be held at our Manayunk location. Directions to the school may be found on the school’s web site (http://www.themusicworkshop.org). The concert will feature the band The Wicked Messengers. The ensemble consists of faculty members Erik Sayles on guitar, Tom Walling on drums (Burndown All-stars, Huffamoose, K Floor) and non-faculty members Jeff Hiatt on bass (Mia Johnson Band, Lowlands) and Adam Davis on pedal steel (Amos Lee, Ben Arnold, Lowlands). The all-original program drawls on an eclectic mix of jazz, alt country and Americana. With Sayles’s unique compositional approach, Walling/Hiatt’s command of their instruments and the addition of Davis’s mastery of pedal steel, the ensemble always pushes the limits of improvisation in an unorthodox setting. Come one come all.

What: An improvisation based ensemble drawling from jazz, alt country and Americana. Instrumentation: guitar, bass, drums and pedal steel.

Why I don't like Matt McClure

While I am sure that Matt McClure is a fine individual, I would have to say I am not happy with him campaign marketing.

For one, his signs are EVERYWHERE. I have seen them on just about every telephone pole and park in my neighborhood. If he stands for what he says he does, why would he create this eyesore in our neighborhoods?

It is one thing if he asked people in the neighborhood to display yard signs, but to put them at train stations and parks is trashy in my opinion.

Second - His phone calls. Just about everyday I come home and there is a message from Matt McClure on my voicemail. One phone call would be more than enough for me. But honestly, the amount of voicemails makes me not want to vote for this guy.

I am a strict democrat always have, always will be, but this makes me want to vote for somebody else in the primaries.

Politics as usual in Philadelphia.

Comic Energy Looks To Rock Grape Street Halloween Night!

Coming fresh off of their successful "Back To School Special" last month, the troupe is focused to make the Manayunk crowd from Grape Street Pub (4100 Main Street) croon for more. "The troupe is focused, we had a great 2-week run and we are looking to capitalize on it by taking it to the next level Halloween night", says director James Daly.

This show is unlike any sketch comedy performance you may have seen. As Daly and his team look to pull off some new and innovative ideas that they have been brewing for this specific show.

Including the addition of Chester County Love Machine, special effects on their take of Ghostbusters, a singing corpse, as well as some performance techniques to bring more of a 'natural feeling' to their product.

Comic Energy is compared by their fans to the likeness of "Second City" in Chicago and "In Living Color".

The curtain will rise on Halloween night at 8pm with Chester County Love Machine and Comic Energy, Philly's #1 sketch comedy troupe.

For more how information visit Comic Energy online at www.comicenergy.com. Or visit Grape Street Pub online at www.grapestreet.com.

In 1999, I opened TMW to provide the Philadelphia area with the highest caliber of music instruction possible. I felt that I could assemble the finest teaching staff in the region, and I have. All of our instructors are hand-picked by myself because of their expertise and proficiency on their instrument, their attention to quality instruction, and their reputation in the musical community.
Many of our instructors are long time colleagues whose reputation I can personally attest to. I hope that you will give us the opportunity to prove to you that our staff is the best available, and I welcome your comments.

Sincerely,
Erik Sayles Owner/Instructor

Earl Pickens @ Grape Street

Earl Pickens is playing Grape Street in Manayunk this Tuesday 9/26. The show marks his first Philly appearance.

Earl brings the energy and presence of a full rock band to an acoustic set of carefully crafted country songs. It's about time Philly gets a chance to check him out.

You can listen to songs from his debut album "Country Music Jukebox." One of his tracks made its way onto wxpn's syndicated World Cafe show. He's also scheduled to sit on Gene Shay's The Folk Show in November.

Stop by Grape Street if you can to show Earl some Philly support.
